What is Biofilm?

A biofilm is a protective, complex community of microorganisms (like bacteria and fungi) that stick together and often anchor themselves to a surface.

The Structure: A Slimy, Defensive Shield

The Community: Microorganisms adhere to each other and surfaces (moist surfaces (and dry), medical devices, pipes, teeth etc.).
The Matrix: The cells become fully encased within a sticky, self-produced protective substance called the extracellular matrix (or EPS). This matrix is what gives biofilm its characteristic “slimy” appearance.

The Problem: Tolerance, Resistance and Resilience

This structure is a primary driver of infection and product failure:

Extreme Protection: The EPS matrix acts as a physical shield, helping the microorganisms to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including temperature shifts and cleaning chemicals.
Antimicrobial Resistance and Tolerance: Biofilm dramatically increases the microorganisms’ resistance and tolerance to antimicrobial and antibiotic treatments, often making standard concentrations of antimicrobials ineffective.
