Effectiveness of a next-generation anti-biofilm wound dressing on in vitro biofilms.

Abstract: The presence of biofilms in chronic wounds has been associated with impaired wound repair and changes in inflammatory profiles. There is a great need for the evaluation of wound dressings in suitable in vitro biofilm-infected wound models. This study has demonstrated the effectiveness of an innovative anti-biofilm agent against S. aureus biofilms in a 3-D in vitro skin model. The effect of this agent on in vitro biofilms was demonstrated using CLSM. Furthermore, the use of the anti-biofilm agent reduced the secreted levels of IL-6 in the biofilm-infected wound model. Cytotoxicity screening has showed that this agent is not cytotoxic to cells and therefore should be considered a potential treatment in biofilm-infected wounds.
