Next generation smart anti-biofilm wound dressings.

Abstract: The development of microbial biofilms within wound tissue has been recorded and cause tissue destruction. STUDY AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of a next-generation smart patent pending anti-biofilm complex in the control of existing biofilms and modulation of inflammatory cytokines in a 3-dimensional skin model. This study has demonstrated the effectiveness of a smart, next-generation anti-biofilm agent, incorporated into gauze, and hydrogel platforms, against in vitro biofilms. The study has also demonstrated the effectiveness of an innovative anti-biofilm agent against S. aureus biofilms in a 3-D in vitro skin model. Furthermore, the use of the anti-biofilm agent reduced the secreted levels of IL-6 in the biofilm-infected wound model.

The wide application of this patent pending smart anti-biofilm agent in a variety of platforms has applications in a variety of wound types. It represents a fundamental component of a next generation antibiofilm strategy.
